Sport and all things Sporting

Many people are involved in sport in some way or other from football to Golf, from Cricket to Rugby, athletics and equestrian wether as a participant or spectator of any of these games it touches all our lives in one way or another.

If all the sports fans in the UK, taking in all known sports, participants and spectators, were laid end to end they would form a chain reaching round the moon and back starting and finishing in Huddersfield. Do you think that's true? Well, it might be, who knows? True or not the chain would reach a very long way! The important fact is that an enormous number of people have some kind of involvement in one sport or another, often more than one.

It's always been like that of course as far back as recorded history goes. Trials of skill and strength, speed and endurance have evolved into the sports we know today. Fishermen in days gone by would race home with their catches to be first back in port. The prize? The first boat back got the best price for he fish. Soon they would race each other when they weren't working, just for fun and a prize. Now sailing's an Olympic sport. There are plenty of other examples. People are naturally competitive. It's as simple as that.

Not all sports are about competing with one another of course. Some are about pitting one's skill and strength against natural challenges. Mountaineering and rock climbing for example. The determination that drives the mountaineer and explorer is what also drove men to build railways across continents surmounting incredible obstacles along the way. So it does come in useful as well!

We may not have the skills, stamina or even inclination to do any of these things ourselves, even to play the games. Even so we love to watch those who do, especially those  who play really well. We can all admire expertise in others.

In these days of widespread television coverage we can watch all manner of sport from our armchairs without any exertion on our part at all. You don't have to play football to raise your heart rate. You can do that just watching your favourite team on the box!

Having said all that there's nothing quite like being there at a big sporting event. The crowd, the excitement, the atmosphere, all combine to create a really special feeling in the heart of the true fan. Of course getting hold of tickets isn't always easy is it?
